COVID-19 pandemic in Russia

The COVID-19 pandemic in Russia (pronunciation: /koʊvɪd naɪnˈtiːn pænˈdɛmɪk ɪn ˈrʌʃə/) refers to the ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), in the Russian Federation. The first case of COVID-19 in Russia was confirmed on 31 January 2020.

Etymology

The term "COVID-19" is derived from "Coronavirus Disease 2019". The disease is caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2, which is short for "Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2". The name "Russia" comes from Rus', a state that existed from the 9th to 13th centuries, which the modern Russian Federation considers its historical predecessor.

Epidemiology

The first confirmed case of COVID-19 in Russia was reported in the Siberian region of Tyumen on 31 January 2020. The patient was a Chinese national who had recently arrived from China. The first cases of local transmission were reported in Moscow in March 2020.
