CCL1

CCL1 (pronounced as C-C-L-One), also known as Chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 1, is a small cytokine belonging to the CC chemokine family that is also known as TCA3 (T cell activation gene 3). It is closely related to other chemokines such as MIP-1 alpha and RANTES, and has been implicated in the pathophysiology of several diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and HIV.

Pronunciation

CCL1 is pronounced as "C-C-L-One".

Etymology

The term "CCL1" is an abbreviation for "Chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 1". The term "chemokine" is derived from "chemotactic cytokine", referring to the ability of these molecules to induce directed chemotaxis in nearby responsive cells.

Related Terms

  • Chemokine: A family of small cytokines, or signaling proteins secreted by cells. Their name is derived from their ability to induce directed chemotaxis in nearby responsive cells.
  • Cytokine: A broad and loose category of small proteins that are important in cell signaling.
  • RANTES: A chemokine that is a specific chemoattractant for memory T lymphocytes and monocytes.
  • MIP-1 alpha: A protein that in humans is encoded by the CCL3 gene. It is involved in the acute inflammatory state in the recruitment and activation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes.
  • Pathophysiology: The study of the disordered physiological processes that cause, result from, or are otherwise associated with a disease or injury.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis: A long-term autoimmune disorder that primarily affects joints. It typically results in warm, swollen, and painful joints.
  • HIV: A virus that attacks the body's immune system. If HIV is not treated, it can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).
