C-Met

C-Met (pronounced: see-met), also known as hepatocyte growth factor receptor (pronounced: hep-uh-toe-site growth factor re-cep-tor), is a protein that in humans is encoded by the MET gene.

Etymology

The term "C-Met" is derived from the words "cellular" and "mesenchymal-epithelial transition factor", which is the full form of the MET gene. The MET gene provides instructions for making the C-Met protein.

Function

C-Met is a receptor tyrosine kinase that is produced by cells of the liver. It is essential for embryonic development, organogenesis and wound healing. The C-Met protein plays a crucial role in cell proliferation, cell survival, angiogenesis, and cell motility.
