Bundle of His

Bundle of His (pronounced: /ˈbʌndəl ɒv ˈhɪs/) is a collection of heart muscle cells specialized for electrical conduction that transmits the electrical impulses from the AV node (atrioventricular node) to the point of the apex of the fascicular branches.

Etymology

The Bundle of His is named after the Swiss cardiologist Wilhelm His Jr., who discovered this part of the heart's conduction system in 1893.

Function

The Bundle of His plays a crucial role in the electrical conduction system of the heart by transmitting electrical impulses from the AV node to the ventricles of the heart. This ensures the synchronized contraction of the ventricles, which is necessary for the effective pumping of blood.

Related Terms

  • AV node: The atrioventricular node is a part of the electrical conduction system of the heart that coordinates the top of the heart. It slows down the electrical signal before it enters the ventricles. This delay ensures that the atria have ejected their blood into the ventricles first before the ventricles contract.
  • Fascicular branches: These are branches of the Bundle of His that carry the electrical impulse to the large muscular mass of the ventricles.
  • Purkinje fibers: These fibers are located in the inner ventricular walls of the heart, just beneath the endocardium in a network of tiny fibers that form the Purkinje network. They are responsible for relaying the impulses to the ventricular cells that in turn initiate the contractions of the heart muscles.
