Bladder Training

Bladder training (pronunciation: /ˈblædər ˈtreɪnɪŋ/) is a behavioral therapy that aims to improve bladder control and increase bladder capacity. This therapy is often used for individuals suffering from Urinary Incontinence or Overactive Bladder Syndrome.

Etymology

The term "bladder training" is derived from the English words "bladder", referring to the organ that stores urine, and "training", which implies the process of learning or teaching a particular skill or type of behavior.

Definition

Bladder training involves scheduled voiding and gradually increasing the time between voiding. It is a first-line therapy for Urge Incontinence and Mixed Incontinence. The goal is to prevent leaks, manage urgency, and increase the time between trips to the bathroom.

Procedure

Bladder training typically involves the following steps:

  1. Scheduled Voiding: The patient starts by urinating at set, frequent intervals, such as every two hours.
  2. Delaying Voiding: Once the patient is comfortable with the schedule, they try to delay urination for longer periods gradually. This step helps increase bladder capacity.
  3. Maintaining the Schedule: The patient continues the new voiding schedule for a few weeks to several months, depending on their progress.
