Biological tissues

Biological tissues (pronunciation: /baɪəˈlɒdʒɪkəl ˈtɪʃuːz/) are groups of cells that have a similar structure and act together to perform a specific function. There are four basic types of tissue in the body of all animals, including the human body. These are epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissue.

Etymology

The term "tissue" comes from the French word "tissu", which means "woven", referring to the fact that tissues are typically made up of many cells woven together. The prefix "bio-" comes from the Greek word "bios", meaning "life", and "logical" comes from the Greek word "logos", meaning "study". Thus, "biological" refers to the study of life.

Types of Biological Tissues

  • Epithelial Tissue: This tissue covers the whole surface of the body. It is made up of cells closely packed and ranged in one or more layers. This tissue is specialized to form the covering or lining of all internal and external body surfaces.
  • Connective Tissue: This tissue is characterized by an abundance of intercellular material known as the extracellular matrix, which helps provide support and bind together the body's tissues and organs.
  • Muscle Tissue: This tissue is specialized for contraction and includes skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscle tissues.
  • Nervous Tissue: This tissue is specialized for the conduction of electrical impulses that convey information or instructions from one region of the body to another.

Related Terms

  • Histology: The study of the microscopic structure of tissues.
  • Organ (anatomy): A group of tissues in a living organism that have been adapted to perform a specific function.
  • Cell (biology): The basic structural, functional, and biological unit of all known living organisms.
