Benzos

Benzos (pronounced: /ˈben.zoʊz/), short for Benzodiazepines (pronounced: /ˌben.zoʊ.daɪˈæz.ə.piːn/), are a class of psychoactive drugs. The term "benzos" is derived from the name of the chemical compound, which is itself named after the fusion of the words "benzene" and "diazepine".

Benzos are commonly prescribed for a variety of conditions, including anxiety, insomnia, seizures, and alcohol withdrawal. They work by enhancing the effect of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at the GABA_A receptor, resulting in sedative, hypnotic (sleep-inducing), anxiolytic (anti-anxiety), anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant properties.

Types of Benzos

There are several types of benzos, including but not limited to:

  • Alprazolam: Commonly known as Xanax, it is primarily used for the treatment of panic disorder and anxiety disorders.
  • Diazepam: Also known as Valium, it is used for the treatment of anxiety, alcohol withdrawal syndrome, benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome, muscle spasms, seizures, trouble sleeping, and restless legs syndrome.
  • Lorazepam: Marketed under the brand Ativan, it is used for the treatment of anxiety disorders, trouble sleeping, active seizures including status epilepticus, alcohol withdrawal, and chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.

Side Effects

Like all medications, benzos can have side effects. These may include drowsiness, dizziness, upset stomach, blurred vision, and confusion. Long-term use can lead to dependence and withdrawal symptoms upon cessation.
