Basal

Basal (/ˈbeɪsəl/; from Latin basalis, "belonging to the base") refers to a base or foundational element in various contexts, particularly in biology and medicine.

Medical Context

In a medical context, basal often refers to conditions, rates, or values at rest or at a minimum level. It is commonly used in terms such as Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC), and Basal Ganglia.

Basal Metabolic Rate

The Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the rate of energy expenditure per unit time by endothermic animals at rest. It is reported in energy units per unit time ranging from watt (joule/second) to ml O2/min or joule per hour per kg body mass J/(h·kg).

Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is a type of skin cancer that begins in the basal cells. Basal cells produce new skin cells as old ones die. Limiting sun exposure can help prevent these cells from becoming cancerous.

Basal Ganglia

The Basal Ganglia are a group of subcortical nuclei, of varied origin, in the brains of vertebrates, including humans, which are situated at the base of the forebrain and top of the midbrain. They are some of the most densely connected structures in the brain, involved in many functions, including control of voluntary motor movements, procedural learning, habit learning, eye movements, cognition, and emotion.

Related Terms

  • Basal Layer: The basal layer is the deepest layer of the epidermis, composed of dividing cells and is responsible for the regeneration of the epidermis.
  • Basal Temperature: Basal body temperature is the body's temperature at rest, often used in tracking ovulation in women.
  • Basal Insulin: Basal insulin is a type of insulin that controls blood sugar levels in individuals with diabetes when they are not eating.
