A Barcode (pronounced: /ˈbɑːrkoʊd/) is a method of representing data in a visual, machine-readable form. Originating from the Greek words "baros" meaning weight, and "code", which is a system of symbols used to represent secret meaning, the term "barcode" was first coined in the late 20th century.

Barcodes are used extensively in healthcare for patient identification, tracking medical equipment, and ensuring accurate medication dispensing. They are also used in other industries such as retail and logistics.

Types of Barcodes

There are two main types of barcodes: linear or 1D (one-dimensional) barcodes and 2D (two-dimensional) barcodes.

  • Linear or 1D Barcodes - These are the traditional, "classic" barcodes that are made up of lines and spaces of various widths that create specific patterns.
  • 2D Barcodes - These barcodes are more complex and can represent more data than linear barcodes. They use squares, dots, hexagons, and other geometric patterns.
