Ascend

Ascend (/əˈsɛnd/), from the Latin ascendere meaning "to climb up", is a term used in various fields of medicine. It generally refers to the upward movement or progression of a condition or substance within the body.

In anatomy, ascend refers to the movement of a structure in a superior direction, or towards the head. For example, the ascending colon is the part of the colon that ascends from the cecum to the transverse colon.

In pathology, ascend can refer to the progression of a disease or infection from a lower part of the body to a higher part. For example, an ascending infection is one that starts in the lower urinary tract and ascends to the kidneys.
