Artificial Eye

Artificial eye (pronunciation: /ɑːrˈtɪfɪʃəl aɪ/) is a type of prosthetic device designed to replace a missing or damaged eye.

Etymology

The term "artificial eye" originates from the Latin word "artificium" meaning "made by art" and the Old English word "ēage" meaning "eye".

Description

An artificial eye is typically made of medical grade plastic material, such as poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). It is custom-made to fit the individual's eye socket and match the color of the existing eye. The artificial eye does not provide vision, but it helps to maintain the shape of the eye socket and support the eyelid.
