Ankle Sprain

An Ankle Sprain (pronunciation: /ˈæŋ.kəl/ /spreɪn/) is a common musculoskeletal injury that occurs when the ankle rolls, twists or turns in an awkward way. This can stretch or tear the tough bands of tissue (ligaments) that help hold your ankle bones together.

Etymology

The term "Ankle Sprain" is derived from the Middle English "ankel" for ankle and the Old English "sprengan" for sprain, which means to damage (a joint) by sudden twisting or wrenching.

Types of Ankle Sprains

There are three types of ankle sprains, classified by the ligaments involved:

  • Inversion sprain: This is the most common type of ankle sprain and occurs when the foot rolls inward, damaging the outer ligaments.
  • Eversion sprain: This happens when the foot twists outwards, injuring the inner ligaments.
  • High ankle sprain: This is less common and involves the ligaments above the ankle that join together the two long bones of the lower leg, the tibia and fibula.

Symptoms

Symptoms of an ankle sprain can vary depending on the severity of the injury. They may include:

  • Pain, especially when you bear weight on the affected foot
  • Tenderness when you touch the ankle
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Restricted range of motion
  • Instability in the ankle

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of an ankle sprain is typically made through a physical examination and imaging tests, such as X-rays, MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), or CT scan (Computed Tomography scan).

Treatment

Treatment for an ankle sprain depends on the severity of the injury. It may include rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE), physical therapy, medication, and in severe cases, surgery.
