Amethyst
Amethyst (/ˈæməθɪst/ AM-ə-thist) is a violet variety of quartz often used in jewelry. The name comes from the ancient Greek ἀ a- ("not") and μέθυστος méthystos ("intoxicated"), a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness.
Etymology
The Greek word "amethystos" can be translated as "not drunken". Ancient Greeks wore amethyst and carved drinking vessels from it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication. The gemstone is included in the most valuable gemstones until large deposits were found in Brazil.
Use in Medicine
In traditional Chinese Medicine, amethyst is prescribed for stomach pains and bad dreams. It can also be used for the healing of illnesses of the lungs and respiratory tract, skin conditions, cellular disorders, and diseases of the digestive tract.
