American Medical Association (AMA)

The American Medical Association (AMA) is a professional organization for physicians in the United States. Pronounced as /əˈmɛrɪkən ˈmɛdɪkəl əˈsoʊsiˈeɪʃən/, the term originates from the English language, with 'American' referring to the United States, 'Medical' pertaining to the science or practice of medicine, and 'Association' meaning a group of people organized for a joint purpose.

The AMA was founded in 1847, with the aim to promote the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health. It is the largest association of physicians—both MDs and DOs—and medical students in the United States. The association also publishes the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), which has one of the largest circulations of any medical journal in the world.
