Alzheimer Dementia

Alzheimer Dementia (pronounced: alz·hei·mer | \ ˈalts-ˌhī-mər \, dementia | \ di-ˈmen(t)-shə \) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects memory, thinking, and behavior. It is the most common cause of dementia in older adults.

Etymology

The term "Alzheimer" is named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer, a German psychiatrist and neurologist. He first described the disease in 1906, noting the unique symptoms and brain changes associated with the condition. "Dementia" comes from Latin, meaning "madness" or "insanity."

Symptoms

Alzheimer Dementia is characterized by a gradual decline in cognitive abilities, often beginning with memory loss. Other symptoms may include difficulty with problem-solving, confusion about time or place, trouble understanding visual images, problems with speaking or writing, and changes in mood or personality.

Causes

The exact cause of Alzheimer Dementia is unknown, but it is believed to be caused by a combination of genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors. The disease is associated with the buildup of proteins in the brain, forming plaques and tangles that disrupt normal brain function.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of Alzheimer Dementia is typically based on a thorough medical history, physical examination, and cognitive testing. Additional tests, such as brain imaging or blood tests, may be used to rule out other conditions.

Treatment

While there is currently no cure for Alzheimer Dementia, treatments are available to help manage symptoms. These may include medications to slow the progression of the disease, as well as non-drug approaches such as cognitive stimulation therapy and lifestyle changes.
