ABCB5

ABCB5 (pronounced as A-B-C-B-five), also known as ATP-binding cassette sub-family B member 5, is a protein that in humans is encoded by the ABCB5 gene.

Etymology

The term ABCB5 is an acronym derived from ATP-Binding Cassette B sub-family member 5. The ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters form a large family of proteins, which have a common structure and mechanism of action. They are named for their ability to bind and hydrolyze ATP.

Function

ABCB5 is a member of the ABC transporters, a group of integral membrane proteins that actively transport various compounds across extracellular and intracellular membranes. ABCB5 is a transporter protein that has been shown to confer multidrug resistance to cancer cells. In addition to its role in drug resistance, ABCB5 is also known to play a role in cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis.
