112 is an Emergency telephone number used in many countries around the globe as a universal emergency service number, similar to 911 in North America.

Etymology

The number 112 was chosen as the international emergency phone number in 1991 at the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT).

Usage

In many countries, dialing either 1-1-2 (used in Europe and parts of Asia) or 9-1-1 (used in the Americas) will connect callers to the local emergency services. Some countries use other emergency telephone numbers, sometimes also depending on the emergency service. Some but not necessarily all emergency numbers are listed below.
