The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to advancing research and improving the quality of life for individuals living with spinal cord injury (SCI) and paralysis. The foundation was established in honor of actor Christopher Reeve, who became an advocate for SCI research after a horseback riding accident left him paralyzed.

History[edit]

The foundation was originally founded in 1982 as the American Paralysis Association (APA) by a group of people living with spinal cord injuries and their families. In 1995, after Christopher Reeve's accident, he became involved with the organization, and it was later renamed the Christopher Reeve Foundation. Following the death of Dana Reeve, Christopher's wife, in 2006, the foundation was renamed the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation to honor both of their contributions.

Mission[edit]

The mission of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation is to cure spinal cord injury by funding innovative research, and to improve the quality of life for people living with paralysis through grants, information, and advocacy. The foundation supports a wide range of research initiatives, from basic science to clinical trials, and also provides resources and support to individuals and families affected by paralysis.

Research Initiatives[edit]

The foundation funds a variety of research programs aimed at finding treatments and cures for spinal cord injuries. This includes support for basic research to understand the biology of spinal cord injuries, as well as translational research to develop new therapies. The foundation also funds clinical trials to test new treatments in humans.

Quality of Life Programs[edit]

In addition to research, the foundation offers a range of programs designed to improve the quality of life for individuals living with paralysis. These programs include the Quality of Life Grants Program, which provides funding to nonprofit organizations that help people with disabilities, and the Paralysis Resource Center, which offers information and support to individuals and families affected by paralysis.

Advocacy and Awareness[edit]

The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation is also involved in advocacy efforts to raise awareness about spinal cord injuries and to promote policies that support research and improve the lives of people with paralysis. The foundation works with policymakers, researchers, and other organizations to advance its mission.
