Telavancin hydrochloride (pronunciation: te-la-van-cin hy-dro-chlor-ide) is a semi-synthetic derivative of vancomycin, a glycopeptide antibiotic. It is used in the treatment of certain bacterial infections, particularly those caused by Gram-positive bacteria.

Etymology

The name "Telavancin" is derived from its parent compound, vancomycin. The prefix "Tela-" is a modification of "teicoplanin," another glycopeptide antibiotic that shares structural similarities with vancomycin. The suffix "-cin" is common in antibiotics, indicating its role in inhibiting bacterial growth. "Hydrochloride" refers to the hydrochloride salt form of the drug, which enhances its solubility for administration.

Pharmacology

Telavancin hydrochloride works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell death. It is particularly effective against Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE).

Clinical Use

Telavancin hydrochloride is indicated for the treatment of adults with complicated skin and skin structure infections (cSSSI) caused by susceptible isolates of Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus (both methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant isolates), Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus anginosus group (includes S. anginosus, S. intermedius, and S. constellatus), or Enterococcus faecalis (vancomycin-susceptible isolates only).

Side Effects

Common side effects of Telavancin hydrochloride include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Serious side effects may include kidney problems, hearing loss, and QT prolongation.
