seronegative - (pronounced) (SEER-oh-NEH-guh-tiv) Describes a laboratory test result showing that a substance the test is designed to find, such as B. an antibody, is not present at all or in very small amounts. Antibodies are proteins produced by the body's immune system in response to a foreign substance or microorganism, such as a virus. B. a virus can be produced. A seronegative test result usually means that a person has not been exposed to or infected with a virus or other infectious agent and has not developed antibodies to that agent. Sometimes antibodies are formed against the body's own tissue. In this case, a seronegative test result means that a person does not have the antibodies or other markers for a specific disease, such as an autoimmune disease. Further testing may be required to ensure a seronegative test result is correct
