Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Utah. It is one of the largest cities in the Southwest region of the United States, and is the county seat of Salt Lake County. Salt Lake City is known for its high elevation, its historic Mormon population, and as the location of the 2002 Winter Olympics.
History[edit]
Salt Lake City was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young and other followers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), who were seeking to escape persecution they had experienced in the east. They extensively irrigated and cultivated the arid valley and faced persecution from the U.S. government for their practice of polygamy, which was officially discontinued in 1890.
Geography[edit]
Salt Lake City is located in a large valley, the Salt Lake Valley, separated by the Wasatch Mountains to the east and the Oquirrh Mountains to the west. It is near the Great Salt Lake and the Great Basin.
Economy[edit]
The economy of Salt Lake City is service-oriented. In the past, mining and railroad construction played significant roles. Today, the city's major industries are government, trade, transportation, utilities, and professional and business services.
Culture[edit]
Salt Lake City is known for its music scene and festivals, including the Utah Arts Festival, the Twilight Concert Series, and the Salt Lake City International Jazz Festival. The city is also home to a number of museums and the Utah Symphony.
Education[edit]
Salt Lake City is served by the Salt Lake City School District, Granite School District, and private schools. Higher education institutions include the University of Utah, Westminster College, and Salt Lake Community College.
Transportation[edit]
Salt Lake City's transportation is served by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) and includes buses, light rail called TRAX, and a commuter rail train called FrontRunner.
