The term "vitreous" comes from the Latin word "vitreus", which means "glassy". This is in reference to the clear, glass-like appearance of the vitreous humor that fills the chamber.

The vitreous chamber is a large, rounded space, occupying about two-thirds of the eye's volume. It is bounded anteriorly by the lens and the ciliary body, and posteriorly by the retina.
