Orbicularis oris
Orbicularis Oris
The Orbicularis Oris (pronounced: or-bi-cu-lar-is or-is) is a complex of muscles in the lips that encircles the mouth. Until recently, it was misinterpreted as a sphincter, or circular muscle, but it is actually composed of several groups of muscles, interwoven and working together to provide all-around movement and control of the mouth and lips.
Etymology
The term "Orbicularis Oris" is derived from Latin, where "orbicularis" means circular, and "oris" refers to the mouth. Thus, the term literally translates to "circular muscle of the mouth".
Anatomy
The Orbicularis Oris is not a simple sphincter muscle like the Orbicularis oculi, which encircles the eye. Instead, it consists of several strata of muscle fibers surrounding the mouth, with fibers running in different directions to allow for complex movements. The muscle is responsible for movements such as puckering the lips and closing the mouth.
Function
The primary function of the Orbicularis Oris is to control the movement and positioning of the mouth and lips. This muscle plays a crucial role in facial expressions, speech, and the intake of food and drink. It also helps in forming a seal to prevent air from escaping during speech or the playing of wind instruments.
