NSTEMI (pronounced en-stem-ee, /ɛnˈstɛmi/), is an acronym for Non-ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction. It is a type of myocardial infarction (heart attack) that is identified by specific changes on an electrocardiogram (ECG).

Etymology

The term NSTEMI is derived from the medical terminology used to describe the findings on an ECG. "Non-ST-Elevation" refers to the absence of a specific finding (ST-elevation) on the ECG, which is typically seen in another type of heart attack known as an ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI). "Myocardial Infarction" is a term derived from Greek, with "myo-" meaning muscle, "cardial" referring to the heart, and "infarction" referring to the death of tissue due to lack of blood supply.

Definition

NSTEMI is a type of heart attack that occurs when blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked and a portion of the heart muscle is damaged or dies. Unlike a STEMI, in an NSTEMI, the blockage may be partial or temporary, and the damage to the heart is usually less severe. It is diagnosed based on symptoms, blood tests for certain proteins (such as troponin), and ECG findings.
