Modern medicine is a system in which medical doctors and other healthcare professionals (such as nurses, pharmacists, and therapists) use drugs, radiation, or surgery to treat symptoms and diseases. It is also known as allopathic medicine, biomedicine, mainstream medicine, orthodox medicine, or Western medicine.
History
Modern medicine began in the 19th century with the development of microbiology, anatomy, and biochemistry. The discovery of germ theory and the development of antibiotics and vaccines have significantly improved the treatment of infectious diseases. The 20th century saw further advancements, including the development of genetics, molecular biology, and medical technology.
