Martial arts (pronunciation: /ˈmɑːrʃəl ɑːrts/) are codified systems and traditions of combat practices, which are practiced for a variety of reasons such as self-defense, military and law enforcement applications, mental and spiritual development, and entertainment.
Etymology
The term martial arts comes from Latin, and means "arts of Mars", the Roman god of war. The term was introduced in the 1550s in reference to the skills of warfare.

Types of Martial Arts
- Karate: A martial art developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom, it developed from the indigenous Ryukyuan martial arts under the influence of Kung Fu.
- Judo: A modern martial art, which has since evolved into a combat and Olympic sport.
- Taekwondo: A Korean martial art, characterized by its emphasis on head-height kicks, jumping and spinning kicks, and fast kicking techniques.
- Kung Fu: A Chinese martial art and a form of exercise with a history of over 300 years. It can strengthen the body and improve health.
