JDRF (pronounced: Jay-Dee-Are-Eff), formerly known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, is a major charitable organization dedicated to funding Type 1 diabetes research.
Etymology
The acronym JDRF stands for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The organization was originally focused on juvenile diabetes, which is now more commonly referred to as Type 1 diabetes. In 2012, the organization dropped the full name and became simply JDRF, to reflect the fact that both children and adults are affected by Type 1 diabetes.
History
JDRF was founded in 1970 by parents of children with Type 1 diabetes. The organization's mission is to improve lives today and tomorrow by accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat Type 1 diabetes and its complications.
