The word hotel is derived from the French hôtel, which referred to a townhouse or any other building seeing frequent visitors. This is a derivation from the Old French hostel, which developed from the Latin hospes, meaning "guest" or "host".

Facilities provided inside a hotel room can range from a modest-quality mattress in a small room to large suites with bigger, higher-quality beds, a dresser, a refrigerator and other kitchen facilities, upholstered chairs, a flat screen television, and en-suite bathrooms.
