Short definitionheterozygous genotype (HEH-teh-roh-ZY-gus JEE-noh-tipe) A term used to describe that there are two different versions of the same gene (one from the mother and one from the inherited from father). In a heterozygous genotype, each gene can have a different mutation (change), or one of the genes can be mutated and the other normal.

For example, familial hypercholesterolemia (very high blood cholesterol) can occur when a person has a heterozygous LDLRG gene, inheriting a mutated gene from one parent and a normal gene from the other parent
