Scutellaria barbata is a species of flowering plant in the mint family, Lamiaceae. It is native to Asia. Its common names include barbed skullcap, barbat skullcap, and skullcap. The plant is a perennial herb that grows to about 35 cm in height. It has blue to lavender flowers that bloom from July to September.

Description[edit]

The Scutellaria barbata plant has a square stem with opposite leaves. The leaves are lanceolate to ovate and have a serrated margin. The flowers are blue to lavender and are borne in racemes. The fruit is a nutlet.

Distribution and habitat[edit]

Scutellaria barbata is native to Korea, China, Japan, Mongolia, and Russia. It grows in moist and wet habitats, including marshes, wet meadows, and along streambanks.

Uses[edit]

Scutellaria barbata has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2000 years. It is used to treat various conditions, including inflammation, cancer, and infections. The plant contains flavonoids, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
