Compressor

(Redirected from Heat of compression)

Compressor is a mechanical device that increases the pressure of a gas by reducing its volume. This is an important device in many fields, including in the medical field where it is used in various applications such as in respiratory therapy and in the operation of certain medical equipment.

Overview[edit]

A compressor is a machine that takes in a moderate-to-low pressure gas and compresses it to a higher pressure. This is achieved by reducing the volume of the gas, which in turn increases its pressure. The energy required to compress the gas is usually provided by an electric motor, diesel engine, or a steam turbine.

Types of Compressors[edit]

There are several types of compressors, each with its own specific use and application. These include:

  • Reciprocating Compressor: This type of compressor uses pistons driven by a crankshaft to deliver gases at high pressure.
  • Rotary Screw Compressor: These compressors use two meshed rotating positive-displacement helical screws to force the gas into a smaller space.
  • Centrifugal Compressor: This type of compressor uses an impeller with blades to draw the gas in, compress it and expel it at a higher pressure.

Medical Applications[edit]

In the medical field, compressors are used in a variety of applications. These include:

  • Respiratory Therapy: Compressors are used in respiratory therapy to provide patients with a continuous supply of compressed air or oxygen. This is particularly important for patients with conditions such as asthma or COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), who may struggle to breathe without assistance.
  • Medical Equipment Operation: Many types of medical equipment, such as ventilators and anesthesia machines, rely on compressors to function properly. These machines require a steady supply of compressed air or gas to operate.
