Definition
A health indicator is a characteristic of an individual, population, or environment which is subject to measurement (directly or indirectly) and can be used to describe one or more aspects of the health of an individual or population (quality, quantity and time). Health indicators provide comparable and actionable information across different geographic, organizational or administrative boundaries and/or can track progress over time. They are often used to assess the overall health of a population and to guide health policy decisions.
Types of Health Indicators
Health indicators can be divided into several types, including:
- Mortality indicators: These include measures such as infant mortality rate, under-five mortality rate, and mortality rate from specific diseases.
- Morbidity indicators: These include measures such as prevalence and incidence of specific diseases.
- Risk factor indicators: These include measures such as the prevalence of smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity.
- Service coverage indicators: These include measures such as immunization coverage and access to safe drinking water.
- Health system indicators: These include measures such as health expenditure per capita and the density of health workers.
Uses of Health Indicators
