Gerontology

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

(Redirected from Gerontologist)

Gerontology is the scientific study of old age, the process of aging, and the particular problems of old people. Derived from the Greek words geron (old man) and logia (study of), it is a multidisciplinary field involving the research and analysis of the aging process and individuals as they grow from middle age through later life. It includes the study of physical, mental, and social changes in older people as they age.

Overview

Gerontology is distinguished from geriatrics, which is the branch of medicine that studies the disease and the health of the elderly. Gerontology covers the social, psychological, cognitive, and biological aspects of aging. The multidisciplinary focus of gerontology means that it includes disciplines such as biology, sociology, psychology, and economics.

Fields of Gerontology

Gerontology is divided into two main subfields:

  • Biogerontology: This field is concerned with the biological process of aging. It involves the study of the physical changes that people go through as they age. Biogerontologists aim to understand what these changes are, why they occur, and how they can be slowed down or reversed.
  • Sociogerontology: This field is concerned with the social aspects of aging. It involves the study of the social and societal changes that affect people as they age. Sociogerontologists aim to understand how these changes affect the quality of life and well-being of older people.

Importance of Gerontology

With the aging population in many countries, gerontology has become a crucial area of research. It helps us understand the challenges faced by the elderly and how to address them. It also helps in the development of policies and programs that promote the health and well-being of older adults.
