The 2K12 Kub (NATO reporting name: SA-6 Gainful) is a Soviet mobile surface-to-air missile system designed to protect ground forces from aerial threats. Developed in the 1960s, the system has been widely used by various countries and has seen action in numerous conflicts.

Development[edit]

The development of the 2K12 Kub began in the late 1950s, with the aim of creating a mobile air defense system capable of engaging enemy aircraft at medium altitudes. The system was designed to be highly mobile, allowing it to keep pace with advancing ground forces and provide continuous air defense coverage.

Components[edit]

The 2K12 Kub system consists of several key components:

2P25 Transporter Erector Launcher[edit]

The 2P25 is the transporter erector launcher (TEL) vehicle used in the 2K12 Kub system. It is responsible for transporting, erecting, and launching the missiles. The vehicle is based on a tracked chassis, providing it with excellent mobility across various terrains.

1S91 Radar System[edit]

The 1S91 is the radar system used for target acquisition and missile guidance. It consists of a target acquisition radar and a continuous wave illuminator radar, which work together to detect, track, and guide missiles to their targets.

The radar system is mounted on a tracked vehicle, allowing it to move with the rest of the system and maintain coverage of the protected area.

Missiles[edit]

The primary missile used by the 2K12 Kub system is the 3M9 missile. It is a two-stage, solid-fuel missile with a range of approximately 24 kilometers and a maximum altitude of 14 kilometers. The missile is guided by semi-active radar homing, using the continuous wave illuminator radar for guidance.

Operational History[edit]

The 2K12 Kub has been used in various conflicts around the world, including the Yom Kippur War, the Iran-Iraq War, and the Gulf War. Its effectiveness in combat has been demonstrated in several engagements, where it successfully engaged and destroyed enemy aircraft.

Deployment[edit]

The 2K12 Kub is typically deployed in batteries, with each battery consisting of several TEL vehicles, a radar vehicle, and support vehicles. The system is designed to be rapidly deployable, allowing it to be set up and operational in a short amount of time.

Upgrades and Variants[edit]

Over the years, the 2K12 Kub has undergone several upgrades to improve its performance and extend its service life. These upgrades have included improvements to the radar system, missile guidance, and mobility.
