Fezli Azam Joo, wife of General Court. The artist: Schoefft, roughly around 1841, Lahore, oil on canvas, 89.5 70.5 cm. (taken from: [2])
According to Jean-Marie Lafont (2002):
[209] Fezli Azam Joo, wife of General Court Oil on canvas by August Schoefft
Signed "Schoefft 1841 Lahor"
114 x 95 cm (with frame)
89.5 x 70.5 cm (within frame)
Private collection
Published here for the first time, this painting shows Fezli sitting for Schoefft in her residence at Naulaka with her two eldest children, Joséphine and Alexandre. In the background, the tomb of Nusrat Khan which was the headquarters of General Court's brigade, and the skyline of Lahore. This is one of the very rare interiors we have of a great Punjabi residence at Lahore before 1849. While in India, August Schoefft made several paintings on the spot. The painting of Fezli Azam Joo confirms that Schoefft accepted private commissions in Punjab.
