Summary

Description
English: Painting of General Claude Auguste Court's Punjabi wife, Fazli Azam (alt. referred to as "Fezli Azam Joo"), and their children (two sons). Painted by August Schoefft in 1841 at Lahore, Pakistan. The full painting can be viewed here (albeit in a lower resolution and image quality): https://twitter.com/hannan021/status/1326790797010866178

Other sources describe her as being a young and beautiful Kashmiri Muslim woman (see: [1]).

Fezli Azam Joo, wife of General Court. The artist: Schoefft, roughly around 1841, Lahore, oil on canvas, 89.5 70.5 cm. (taken from: [2])

According to Jean-Marie Lafont (2002):

[209] Fezli Azam Joo, wife of General Court Oil on canvas by August Schoefft

Signed "Schoefft 1841 Lahor"

114 x 95 cm (with frame)

89.5 x 70.5 cm (within frame)

Private collection

Published here for the first time, this painting shows Fezli sitting for Schoefft in her residence at Naulaka with her two eldest children, Joséphine and Alexandre. In the background, the tomb of Nusrat Khan which was the headquarters of General Court's brigade, and the skyline of Lahore. This is one of the very rare interiors we have of a great Punjabi residence at Lahore before 1849. While in India, August Schoefft made several paintings on the spot. The painting of Fezli Azam Joo confirms that Schoefft accepted private commissions in Punjab.
