A USAID-funded outreach team, operated by Ugandan Marie Stopes (MSU), in the rural areas of Karamoja, is one of the very few ways women can access family planning in the Karamoja area, in the Northern Region of Uganda.

• Nurses like Sister Anne (pictured here) from Moroto Hospital know that family planning can be a powerful tool in combatting high maternal mortality rates. For this reason, she was excited to receive training in providing long-term methods of family planning. Her new skill of inserting contraceptive implants has made her well known as their family planning champion.
• The Karamoja area of Northern Uganda is among the most underserved and impoverished areas in the country. Contraceptive prevalance is extremely low, and ongoing violence and insecurity makes family planning service delivery very difficult. Thousands of women in this region desire to space or delay births, yet they have never heard of family planning and face huge cultural barriers.
