Summary
DescriptionMyrtus communis in Schönbrunn - The Maria Theresa Bridal Myrtle.jpg
English: On the occasion of her marriage to Franz I Stephan, Duke of Lorraine, on 12 February 1736, Maria Theresa received a small myrtle tree as a wedding gift.
As far as is known, the tree was a gift from the Ottoman sultan Mahmud I, who reigned in Constantinople, present-day Istanbul. Today almost three hundred years old, this historic gem of a plant is still being cared for devotedly at Schönbrunn by the gardeners of the Austrian Federal Gardens, as it once was by the gardeners of the former imperial court.
