Thus it came about thatwhile acquiring an education at Anthonys Classical Institutethe young man paid his tuition fees, at least in part, by servingin the capacity of janitor. His hours were long, but he nevergrumbled. All through the course, Prof. Anthony watched,aided and assisted him. A mutual attachment sprang up whichended only with the death of the elder. Billy was his favoritepupil, and the fact that he was also janitor did not in the leastmilitate against him. In fact, the contrary was the case. Whenhe left the Institute it was with high honors. Prof. Anthonylater gave a substantial proof of his friendship and interest byendowing in the Albany Medical College a chair—that of Path-ological Anatomy—to be occupied during his life by Dr. Wil-liam Hailes. The sum thus set aside, the income of which wasto be enjoyed by Dr. Hailes, amounted to five thousand dollars.

HAILES When the young student matriculated at the Albany MedicalCollege he carried with him the same habits of close application,studiousness and enthusiasm that he had shown in public andprivate schools. During his college days he was regarded asone of the most promising students, and was moreover a generalfavorite, as well among his classmates as with the members ofthe faculty. While standing high in all branches of study, hemade a specialty of anatomy, having during his student daysarticulated several skeletons and learned the name and shape ofevery bone in the human frame. In this his knowledge of Latin,acquired in the Classical Institute, became of great value. Notonly did he graduate cum laude, but he succeeded in capturingthe prize eagerly sought for by every student—the honor of pro-nouncing the valedictory.
