English: This Ancient Egyptian 17th dynasty inlaid diadem or crown, composed of silver with gold uraeus and glass or faience inlays, is traditionally associated with the burial of the 17th dynasty Theban king Nubkheperre Intef.[1] It is today in the collection of the Leiden Museum (or Rijksmuseum van Oudheden) in the Netherlands where its registration number is No. AO. 11a. This rare crown was found in Dra' Abu el-Naga' on the West Bank of the Nile at Thebes presumably from Nubkheperre Intef's royal tomb in the early days of Egyptology when recordkeeping was weak to non-existent. Nevertheless, this beautiful object was an important find from a time during the Second Intermediate Period when Egypt was divided into two between the Hyksos controlled north and the Theban dominated South. Today a second probable 17th dynasty crown has been located in Britain which may perhaps have originated from the burial of Queen Mentuhotep, the wife of king Djehuti. |
