Farms (pronunciation: /fɑːrmz/) are areas of land that are devoted primarily to agricultural processes with the primary objective of producing food and other crops; it is the basic facility in food production. The name is derived from the Middle English ferme, meaning "rent, lease", which is from the Old English feorm, "provision, food, supplies, security".

The term "farm" comes from the Old English feorm, "provision, food, supplies, security", which in turn comes from Proto-Germanic *fermō meaning "provision, food". This term was borrowed from Proto-Indo-European *perh₃-mo- which is a derivative of *perh₃- "to provide, produce".
