Ethnicity

From Food & Medicine Encyclopedia

(Redirected from Ethnic Groups)

Ethnicity refers to the social group a person belongs to, and either identifies with or is identified with by others, as a result of a mix of cultural and other factors including language, diet, religion, ancestry and physical features traditionally associated with race. It is a means by which people identify themselves and others. This social construct is recognized by society and can have a significant impact on a person's life.

Definition[edit]

Ethnicity is often used as a descriptor for groups of people who have a shared heritage or background. This can include shared language, culture, and traditions, among other things. Ethnicity is often self-identified, meaning that a person can choose to identify with a certain ethnic group. However, it can also be assigned or attributed by others.

Ethnicity and Health[edit]

Ethnicity can have a significant impact on health. Certain ethnic groups may be at higher risk for certain diseases or conditions. For example, African Americans are at a higher risk for certain types of heart disease, while Ashkenazi Jews are at a higher risk for certain types of cancer. Understanding these risks can help healthcare providers provide better care for their patients.

Ethnicity and Society[edit]

Ethnicity can also play a role in society. It can influence a person's experiences and opportunities. For example, a person's ethnicity can influence their experiences with discrimination or privilege. It can also influence their access to resources and opportunities.
