Essay
Essay is a short piece of writing on a particular subject. The word 'essay' derives from the French infinitive 'essayer', which means 'to try' or 'to attempt'. In English, 'essay' first meant "a trial" or "an attempt", and this is still an alternative meaning.
History[edit]
The concept of an "essay" has been extended to other media beyond writing. A film essay is a movie that often incorporates documentary filmmaking styles and focuses more on the evolution of a theme or an idea. A photographic essay covers a topic with a linked series of photographs that may have accompanying text or captions.
Types of Essays[edit]
There are several types of essays including:
- Narrative Essay - This type of essay tells a story or narrates an event or incident.
- Descriptive Essay - This type of essay describes a person, place, event, or thing in detail.
- Expository Essay - This type of essay presents a balanced analysis of a topic.
- Persuasive Essay - This type of essay uses reason and evidence to show that one idea is more legitimate than another idea.
Structure of an Essay[edit]
An essay generally has three parts:
- Introduction - This is the first paragraph of an essay. It introduces the reader to the topic and gives a brief overview of what the essay will cover.
- Body - This is the main part of the essay. It contains the arguments, evidence, and examples that support the thesis statement.
- Conclusion - This is the last paragraph of an essay. It summarizes the main points and gives a final perspective on the topic.
