Electrodiagnostic medicine is a medical subspecialty that uses neurophysiologic techniques to diagnose, evaluate, and treat patients with neurologic, neuromuscular, and muscular disorders.

Pronunciation

Electrodiagnostic medicine is pronounced as /ɪˌlɛk.troʊ.daɪ.əgˈnɒs.tɪk ˈmɛd.ɪ.sɪn/.

Etymology

The term "Electrodiagnostic" is derived from the Greek words "electron" meaning amber (from which the word electricity is derived), "dia" meaning through, and "gnosis" meaning knowledge. The term "medicine" is derived from the Latin word "medicina" meaning the art of healing.

Overview

Electrodiagnostic medicine involves the use of electromyographic (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) to diagnose and manage diseases affecting the peripheral nervous system and muscular system. These tests are used to detect abnormal electrical activity produced by muscle and nerve cells in response to stimulation.

  • Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS): Tests that measure how well and how fast the nerves can send electrical signals.
  • Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): The part of the nervous system that consists of the nerves and ganglia outside of the brain and spinal cord.
