Cup
(Redirected from Drinking vessel)
Cup is a common term for a small, typically bowl-shaped container used for drinking liquids, especially beverages like tea or coffee. The term is also used in a variety of other contexts to refer to different types of containers or receptacles.
Etymology
The word "cup" comes from the Old English cuppe, which was derived from the Late Latin cuppa, meaning "cup" or "drinking vessel". The Latin term was in turn borrowed from the Greek kylix, a type of drinking cup.
Types of Cups
There are many different types of cups, each with its own specific use and design. Some of the most common types include:
- Teacup: A small cup, with or without a handle, typically a part of a set with a matching saucer.
- Coffee cup: A cup used to drink coffee. It is typically larger than a teacup.
- Mug: A large, sturdy type of cup typically used for drinking hot beverages, such as coffee, hot chocolate, soup, or tea.
- Paper cup: A disposable cup made out of paper and often lined with plastic or wax to prevent liquid from leaking out.
- Styrofoam cup: A disposable cup made out of polystyrene foam, commonly used for hot drinks or cold beverages.
Cups in Measurement
In addition to their use as drinking vessels, cups are also used as a unit of measurement in cooking, particularly in the United States. The cup as a unit of volume is typically defined as half a pint or approximately 237 milliliters.
Cups in Sports
The term "cup" is also used in sports to refer to a type of trophy awarded in competitions, often in the form of a large, decorative cup or goblet. Examples include the World Cup in soccer and the Stanley Cup in ice hockey.
