Cumulus oophorus

The cumulus oophorus is a cluster of cells that surrounds the oocyte both in the ovarian follicle and after ovulation. These cells are derived from the granulosa cells and play a crucial role in the maturation and release of the oocyte during the process of ovulation.

Structure[edit]

The cumulus oophorus consists of several layers of granulosa cells that are closely associated with the oocyte. These cells are embedded in a matrix of extracellular material that provides structural support and facilitates communication between the oocyte and the surrounding cells. The innermost layer of the cumulus oophorus, which is in direct contact with the oocyte, is known as the corona radiata.

Function[edit]

The primary function of the cumulus oophorus is to support the oocyte during its development and maturation. The cumulus cells provide essential nutrients and signaling molecules that are necessary for the oocyte's growth and preparation for fertilization. Additionally, the cumulus oophorus plays a role in the release of the oocyte from the ovarian follicle during ovulation.

Role in Fertilization[edit]

During fertilization, the cumulus oophorus facilitates the passage of the spermatozoon through the zona pellucida to reach the oocyte. The cumulus cells secrete hyaluronic acid, which forms a gel-like matrix that helps to trap and guide the sperm towards the oocyte. The interaction between the sperm and the cumulus cells is critical for successful fertilization.

Clinical Significance[edit]

The integrity and function of the cumulus oophorus are important indicators of oocyte quality and fertility. In assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), the presence and condition of the cumulus oophorus are often assessed to determine the viability of the oocyte. Abnormalities in the cumulus oophorus can be associated with infertility and other reproductive disorders.
