Determinants of health
Determinants of Health
Determinants of Health (pronunciation: de-ter-min-ants of health) are a range of factors that influence the health status of individuals or populations. At every stage of life, health is determined by complex interactions between social and economic factors, the physical environment and individual behavior.
Etymology
The term "Determinants of Health" was first used in the 1970s by health researchers who needed a term to describe the factors that influenced health outcomes. The word "determinant" comes from the Latin word "determinare", which means "to set limits". The word "health" comes from the Old English word "hælþ", which means "wholeness, a being whole, sound or well".
Social Determinants of Health
Social Determinants of Health are conditions in the environments in which people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks. Environmental Determinants of Health
Environmental Determinants of Health are aspects of the physical environment that can either promote health (such as access to parks and green spaces) or harm health (such as exposure to pollutants or hazardous substances).
Behavioral Determinants of Health
Behavioral Determinants of Health are personal behaviors and habits that can either promote health (such as regular physical activity and a balanced diet) or harm health (such as smoking or excessive alcohol consumption).
