Dental braces (also known as braces, orthodontic cases, or cases) are devices used in orthodontics that align and straighten teeth and help position them with regard to a person's bite, while also aiming to improve dental health.

Etymology

The term "brace" is derived from the Old French word "bracer" meaning "to brace, to make stronger," which is in turn from Latin "brachium" meaning "arm, forearm". The term "dental" is derived from the Latin "dens, dentis" meaning "tooth".

Usage

Braces are often used to correct underbites, as well as malocclusions, overbites, open bites, deep bites, cross bites, crooked teeth, and various other flaws of the teeth and jaw.

There are many types of braces which include traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces, and Invisalign or other clear, removable aligners.
