Denervation refers to the loss of nerve supply to a particular organ or tissue. This can occur due to injury, disease, or surgical intervention. Denervation can lead to various physiological changes, depending on the tissue affected and the duration of the denervation.

Mechanism[edit]

Denervation occurs when the nerves that supply a particular tissue are damaged or severed. This can happen due to trauma, surgical procedures, or diseases that affect the nervous system. When a nerve is damaged, it can no longer transmit signals to the target tissue, leading to a loss of function.

Effects on Muscle Tissue[edit]

One of the most studied effects of denervation is on muscle tissue. When a muscle loses its nerve supply, it undergoes a process called denervation atrophy. This is characterized by a reduction in muscle mass and strength. The muscle fibers become smaller and weaker over time due to the lack of neural stimulation.

Denervation Atrophy[edit]

Denervation atrophy is a specific type of muscle atrophy that occurs when the nerve supply to a muscle is lost. The muscle fibers shrink and the overall muscle mass decreases. This can be seen in the accompanying micrograph, which shows the histological changes in muscle tissue following denervation.

Effects on Other Tissues[edit]

Denervation can also affect other tissues, such as the skin, glands, and organs. For example, denervation of the skin can lead to changes in sensation and sweating. Denervation of glands can affect their secretory functions.

Clinical Implications[edit]

Denervation has several clinical implications. It can result from surgical procedures, such as the removal of a tumor that involves cutting nerves. It can also occur in diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and peripheral neuropathy. Understanding the effects of denervation is important for developing rehabilitation strategies and treatments.
