In the medical field, deceleration can refer to a decrease in the rate of any physiological process, such as heart rate or breathing.

The term "deceleration" originates from the Latin prefix "de-", meaning "down" or "away", and "celerare", derived from "celer", meaning "swift". Thus, it literally translates to "make less swift".
