The Cranial Bones (pronunciation: /ˈkreɪniəl boʊnz/) are the bones that form the protective casing of the brain within the skull. The cranial bones are eight in number, and can be divided into two categories: the cranial vault (or calvaria) and the cranial base.

Etymology

The term "Cranial" is derived from the Latin word "Cranium" which means "skull". The term "Bones" is derived from the Old English word "ban" which means "bone".

Cranial Vault

The cranial vault consists of the following bones:

• Frontal bone
• Parietal bone (2)
• Temporal bone (2)
• Occipital bone

Cranial Base

The cranial base consists of the following bones:

• Ethmoid bone
• Sphenoid bone
